Fragment of an Old Testament
Wisdom of Solomon and Enarratio in prophetam Isaiam
Joseph (scribe)
913 or 914 CE
parchment; Parent manuscript: Codex Atheniensis 2641, National Library of Greece
Constantinople
Free Library of Philadelphia (Lewis E 251)
This manuscript is a rare 10th-century fragment with passages from the Wisdom of Solomon and commentary on the Book of Isaiah. It was commissioned by Byzantine patrician Samonas during the reign of Emperor Leo VI. The text is written in clear bouletée script, which helps to date the fragment to the early 10th century. The fragment itself was seized from its parent manuscript, Codex Atheniensis 2641, and written by a cleric known as Joseph. The fine parchment with ample margins and script suggest an expensive Middle Byzantine manuscript for study and prayer.
